The Great Serum Race : In the winter of 1925, a deadly outbreak of diphtheria hit Nome, Alaska. Officials immediately quarantined the town, but the only way to save the community was with antitoxin serum. Unfortunately, the nearest supply was located in Anchorage, across more than 1,000 miles of snowbound wilderness. Since train routes only covered the first 400 miles, transporting the serum by sled dogs was the only option. Twenty teams braved subzero temperatures and blizzard conditions to run more than 600 miles in six days in a desperate relay race that saved lives and gained national attention. Today, the efforts of these courageous mushers and dogs are commemorated every March by the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
