The Discovery Of Light : David Reid, an American writer, journeys to London to meet Kate, the editor who bought his latest novel. He falls hopelessly in love with her and persuades her to return with him to his home in Massachusetts. There they settle into what appears to be a perfect marriage. But things are not always what they seem, and two years later Kate tells David that she must go away - to visit her sister in New York. Shortly after her departure, David learns she's been killed, run over by a subway train under rather ambiguous circumstances. Was it a suicide? An accident? Murder? Was Kate leaving him for another man, or was she on her way back to him? As David tries to understand what happened, his life begins to resemble that of a character from one of his own dark novels: a car tails him and tries to drive him off the road; the phone often rings just before dawn but the caller always remains silent. And as he is drawn into a plot with a mysterious woman who reminds him of Kate, he becomes entangled in a web of deception and betrayal.
